Home remedies to protect you from cold and flu in winter

A diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy products along with moderate exercise, adequate sleep, and minimal stress contribute to a healthy immune system and might promote a faster recovery if you come down with a cold or the flu. In addition to these, there are some wonderful home remedies which aim at easing the symptoms and keep you comfortable while your immune system fights the virus away. Some of these have been listed below:


Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons, tangerines, pomelos etc must be added to the diet. They are an excellent source of vitamin C and are loaded with antibacterial, antiviral and immune boosting properties.






 Eat 1 orange/ any citrus fruit every day or drink a glass of freshly prepared citrus juice to boost your immunity

Yogurt

Yogurt is a wonderful skin-hydrating agent. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help soothe itchy and dry skin.



Mix 1/2 cup of yogurt and 3 tablespoons of mashed papaya. Add few drops each of honey and lemon juice to it and stir well. Apply this paste on your skin for at least 10 minutes and then wash it off with water. Do this once a week       
                                 

 Green tea and chamomile tea

Green tea has strong antibacterial and antiviral properties and is a powerful antioxidant. Chamomile tea is also said to possess antioxidants that help fight against flu and cold during the winters. 



Drinking approximately 3-5 cups of green tea a day strengthens immune system.

Spices

Spices like black pepper (kalimirch), garlic, asafetida (heeng), carom seeds (ajwain), and cinnamon (dalcheeni), amongst others, are effective home remedies against colds and coughs.

 For best results, boil them in water and then drink that water. They also help in digestion by increasing saliva and bile production.

Dry Fruits

Dry fruits like dried apricots, figs, dates as well as nuts and seeds like flax seeds and sesame seeds provide natural warmth to the body.













Consuming 30g of nuts (which is around a handful) every day helps you meet your daily nutrient requirements and helps the body stay warm.

Honey

Honey is known to be the safest and the easiest way to cure cold and fever during winter. Honey is known for its antibacterial properties that help fight bacteria and virus.

 You can have honey every night before going to bed, or mix it in a cup of warm milk for extra benefit.
